Cutting fluid belongs to a category of coolant and lubricant designed specifically in process of for metalworking like machining and stamping. There are different types of cutting fluids, which include oils, pastes, mists, oil-water emulsions, aerosols, gel, air, and other gases. These fluids are mainly made from petroleum distillates, plant oils, water animal fats and air, or from raw ingredients which depends on which type of cutting fluid is being required, it is also referred as cutting fluid, coolant, or lubricant, cutting oil, cutting compound. It is most beneficial fluid in Metal working and machine processes as per material of workpiece. This Cutting Fluid has common exceptions to iron and brass, which are machined dry (though this is incorrect of all brasses, and any brass machining will likely benefit from the presence of a cutting fluid).

Features of Cutting Fluid :

  • It is used for lubrication as it helps lubricating, chips & other contaminants can be easily removed from the workpiece.
  • The main purpose of Cutting fluid is to cool the equipment and workpiece to reduce thermal expansion of tool.
  • Protect Work against rusting.
  • Prevents the formation of built-up edges (BUE).
  • Reduce friction between the tool and the workpiece, which keeps the cutting forces down and decrease the heat generation.
  • It is used to improve the surface’s finish by protecting the newly formed surface from oxidation and corrosion.
  • Used for cleaning the machining area as a cleansing agent and remove dust near and inside the cutting area. This dust removal is important because dust can cause uneven bites.

Advantages of Cutting Fluid :

  • The cutting fluid also act as lubricating oil. It lubricates cutting tool and reduces the coefficient of friction which  reduces tool wear and  increase life of tool. Lubricating also decrease the generation of heat.
  • Most important function of cutting fluid is heat removal. This cutting fluid cools down the cutting tool and workpiece. When cutting fluid passed over them, then heat is removed by conduction. Heat removing help to decrease thermal stress and thermal expansion, and which helps in increasing the accuracy in dimension of job.
  • Application of cutting fluid reduce the time and cost of production by enabling maximum possible cutting speed.
  • Application of cutting fluid reduce the time and cost of production by enabling maximum possible cutting speed.
  • The cutting fluid cut down the friction between tool, chip, and workpiece interface. As friction decreases the cutting force also get reduced and thus the consumption of power is also reduced.
  • Cutting fluid improve the surface finish of job.
  • Extreme pressure additives are often added to cutting fluids to reduce tool wear.
  • Cutting fluid uses to wash away the chip from tool.
  • Application of cutting fluid facilitates the chip formation, and break chip into small pieces.
  • Cutting fluid prevent corrosion of components.
  • Ensure the safety of the operator and environment upon disposal (toxicity, bacteria, etc.)
